#SelfCareFeb Day 15

Happy Mindful Monday! Can you believe that we are already halfway through #SelfCareFeb? I have loved reading your comments and connecting with you. Let’s keep things going strong through the end of the month! Today’s challenge is all about expanding your musical horizons. Music has the power to soothe the soul and to serve as a means of escape from daily life. No matter if you are sitting at your desk at work, doing chores, studying, or riding public transit, music can help to elevate your mood and decrease your stress levels. It is important to be mindful about the types of music that you listen to.  The music on the radio can affect your energy and some of the lyrics are highly questionable and can really put a damper on your mood. Step outside of your music comfort and discover some new artists. If you always listen to really heavy, thought provoking music, try something more lighthearted. If you never listen to rap or country, give it try, just for today. Here are a few of my favorite ways to discover new music:

1. Ask Your Friends: Post a status on social media asking friends to suggest some new bands or musicians that you should listen to.

2. Spotify: I just discovered Spotify a few months ago. It is an awesome way to browse various genres and to create your own custom playlists. I love the custom playlist option because I have one for cleaning, one for more upbeat music and one for just relaxing.

3. Pandora: Pandora is my favorite music app. I have used it since I was in high school. They suggest songs that you would like based on ratings that you provide for songs that they present to you. Since I have been using it for so long, I find that after a while, you have to create new stations in order for them to continue to suggest new artists to you.

4. Buy the Soundtrack of Your Favorite Movies: Movie soundtracks are curated to match the emotions and messages of movies so if you really love a movie, you would most likely love the music selection of the official soundtrack! I discovered some awesome artists by checking out the soundtrack of my favorite movies from last year including The Fault in Our Stars, The Hunger Games, and Divergent.

My most recent musical discoveries are M83, Of Monsters and Men, and Imagine Dragons. I love their albums so much. Check them out! I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
