This might be my favorite challenge yet! Today’s #SelfCareFeb is all about getting organized and clearing clutter. Be honest, when was the last time you cleaned out your handbag/wallet/purse? When I dumped mine out, I found $10 in dollar bills, old food, a lint roller, a broken mirror (doesn’t that mean bad luck??), and an unused Starbucks gift card. Having a messy and unkempt bag can cause unnecessary stress and worry. Carrying around a heavy bag can also affect your posture and cause shoulder pain. If you constantly lose things in your bag or are convinced that you are becoming a bag lady, this challenge is for you. Grab your handbag, find a comfy place to sit, and let’s get started!
A messy handbag can happen to anyone. Here is my bag:
It isn’t too bad, but it could stand to be much better.
Let’s start by separating things into three piles:
- Necessities: These are things that you use at least once a day. This includes tissues, your phone, your wallet, a small amount of cosmetics, and your keys.
- Junk: This is anything that needs to be thrown away. Look inside your wallet too. Any old receipts need to be thrown away!
- Things that belong somewhere else: In my case, there has been a drought in my town for the past 6 months, so I have no business toting around an umbrella. I need to store that somewhere else until I need it. This also includes random papers, superfluous cosmetics, and duplicates of anything.
Once you have sorted through everything, only put the necessities back in your bag. As you do this, make sure that everything has a place so that you know where to find it when you need it. You may have to invest in a bag that has several compartments so that you can get everything neat and organized. Also, it helps to carry a smaller bag. The bigger your bag, the more stuff you will feel obligated to fill it with.
Bonus Step: Go through your wallet! Get rid of any receipts crammed in there. Organize your credit cards and gift cards according to how often you use them. Make sure that your money is neatly sorted and that it is all facing the same way (remember what I said a couple of days ago about the law of attraction? If you treat your money nicely, you’ll attract more money. I heard Oprah say this once, and since she is a billionaire, it is safe to say that it is worth trying.)
